📆 Career Change

Build a 90-day career change action plan

Turns 'I want to switch careers' into a week-by-week plan with real steps. No vague advice, just what to do and when.

📋 Use when: You've decided to change careers and need a concrete plan instead of just thinking about it
Time: 15-20 min

Deciding to change careers is the easy part. The hard part is what comes next. Most people stall out because the gap between “I want to do something different” and “I have a new job” feels enormous, and they don’t know where to start.

This prompt builds you a 90-day plan with specific weekly actions. It accounts for the fact that you probably still have a day job and can’t spend 40 hours a week on this.

If you haven’t done the career pivot readiness check or the transferable skills audit yet, do those first. They’ll make this plan much sharper.

I'm changing careers and I need a realistic 90-day action plan. Not motivational fluff. Specific steps I can actually do while working full-time.

**Where I'm coming from:**
- Current role: [your title and industry]
- Key skills: [your top 3-5 transferable skills, or paste output from a transferable skills audit]

**Where I'm going:**
- Target role/industry: [what you want to move into]
- Why: [1-2 sentences on what's pulling you in this direction]

**My situation:**
- Hours I can spend on this per week: [be realistic - 5? 10? 15?]
- Financial runway: [how long can you manage a pay cut or gap if needed?]
- Location constraints: [remote only, specific city, willing to relocate?]
- Biggest fear about this change: [be honest]

**What I've already done (if anything):**
[List anything: courses started, people talked to, job postings bookmarked, research done. Or say "nothing yet."]

Build me a 90-day plan with these phases:

**Phase 1: Weeks 1-3 — Research and validate**
- Help me confirm this target makes sense for my skills and situation
- Identify 3-5 specific companies or roles to target
- Find 2-3 people already doing this job I could talk to (informational interviews)
- Figure out what gaps I need to close and which ones actually matter vs. which ones I can skip

**Phase 2: Weeks 4-8 — Build and bridge**
- If I need new skills, recommend the fastest credible way to get them (not a 2-year degree)
- Help me build proof of work: a project, portfolio piece, or contribution that shows I can do the new thing
- Start rewriting my resume and LinkedIn for the target field
- Begin reaching out to people in the industry

**Phase 3: Weeks 9-12 — Apply and land**
- Targeted application strategy (quality over volume)
- Interview prep specific to career changers (handling "why the switch?" and "you don't have direct experience")
- Networking follow-ups
- Backup plan if I need more time

For each week, give me:
- **Focus**: What I'm trying to accomplish
- **Actions**: 2-3 specific things to do (not "research the industry" but "read these types of sources and make a list of X")
- **Time estimate**: How many hours this should take
- **Milestone**: How I know I'm on track

Rules:
- Keep it realistic. I'm doing this alongside a job.
- Don't pad the plan with busywork. If something isn't necessary, leave it out.
- If my target seems unrealistic given my background and timeline, say so early. Suggest a bridge role or adjusted target.
- Account for my financial situation. If I can't afford a gap, the plan should assume I'm applying while employed.
- Don't recommend expensive bootcamps or courses unless there's genuinely no other way. Free resources and projects should be the default.

Tips for better results

  • Paste in your transferable skills audit if you did one. It saves the AI from guessing what you’re good at and makes the plan way more specific.
  • Be honest about your hours. If you say 10 hours a week but you really have 4, the plan will be impossible and you’ll feel like you’re failing by week 2.
  • The informational interviews matter. They feel awkward, but talking to 2-3 people doing the job you want will teach you more than weeks of online research. Ask the AI to help you write the outreach message.
  • Adjust as you go. Run this prompt again at the 30-day mark with an update on what you’ve done. The plan will sharpen as you learn more.
